CHANGING STATES OF MATTER
We already learned that water can change states from a solid to a liquid.
But did you know that water can change states from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid again?
Watch the video below to learn more about changing states of matter.
MELTINGHave you ever wondered what causes an ice cube to turn into water when it is has been left out in the sun? The answer is MELTING!
Melting is the process where heat changes matter from a solid to a liquid. When heat is applied to a solid (like ice), the particles that make up the solid move much faster and further apart from each other . As a result, the solid transforms into a liquid (like water). Can you think of other solids that melt? |
FREEZINGHave you ever wondered what causes rain to turn into icicles when it is really cold outside? The answer is FREEZING!
Freezing is the process where cold temperatures change matter from a liquid to a solid. When cold is applied to a liquid (like rain), the particles that make up the liquid move slower and closer together. As a result, the liquid transforms into a solid (like icicles). Can you think of other liquids that freeze? |
EVAPORATIONHave you ever wondered what causes steam to form over hot coffee? The answer is EVAPORATION!
Evaporation is the process where heat changes matter from a liquid to a gas. When heat is applied to a liquid (like coffee), the particles that make up the liquid move much more rapidly. As a result, the liquid transforms into a gas (like water vapor or steam). This water vapor or steam then leaves the liquid and goes into the air. Can you think of other liquids that evaporate? |
CONDENSATIONHave you ever wondered what causes water to form on a window on a cool day? The answer is CONDENSATION!
Condensation is the process where cold changes matter from a gas to a liquid. When cold is applied to a gas (like air), the particles that make up the gas move more slowly and closer together. As a result, the gas transforms into a liquid (like water) which can accumulate on windows. Can you think of other gases that condense? |
